  Roger Raveel (1921-2013) was a Belgian painter known for probing the border between reality and fiction in his work. A painter between post-expressionism and pop-art. Raveel playfully arranged motifs culled from everyday life, morphing bicyclists, birds, and striped poles closer or further away from abstraction depending on the painting. Born on July 15, 1921 in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, Belgium, he went on to study at the art academies in both Ghent and Deinze. Raveel notably made a pilgrimage to visit the elderly artist James Ensor during the mid-1940s in the town of Ostend. Ensor’s themes sometimes manifested themselves in Raveel’s work, as seen in his Memory of my Mother’s Deathbed (1965) which recalls the former artist’s My Dead Mother (1915). Raveel died at the age of 91 on January 30, 2013 in Deinze, Belgium. Today, his works are held in the collections of SMAK (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) in Ghent, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, Netherlands, and the Roger Raveel Museum in his hometown of Machelen-aan-de-Leie, among others.

  Pintor, dibujante y artista gráfico postexpresionista, relacionado con el Pop Art, del que es precursor. Trabaja en esta dirección desde 1952. También crea cerámica y objetos de arte.

  Estudió en las Academias de Deinze (1937-40, H. Malfait) y Gante (1941-45, J. Verdegem). Estudios de cerámica en la Academia de Gante (1954) y en Italia (1962). Pinta frescos en los sótanos del castillo de Beervelde (1966-67). Profesor de la Academia de Deinze (1960-73). Mencionado JPB (1958 y 60) y Premio Europeo de Pintura (Ostende, 1962).

  A partir de 1948 desarrolla un estilo muy personal y construye un nuevo lenguaje plástico a partir de una nueva percepción de los objetos de su entorno. Se esfuerza por lograr una intensa interacción entre la pintura y el espectador.

  Representó a nuestro país en 1968 en la Biönnale de Venecia y en la Documenta de Kassel. Elevado a la nobleza en 1994. Trabaja en la estación de metro Merode de Bruselas. En 1999 se inauguró el Museo Raveel (arquitecto: S. Beel) en su pueblo natal. Trabaja en los museos de Amberes, Brujas, Bruselas, Gante, Lieja, Ostende, así como en numerosos museos de los Países Bajos.
