  Under a sunny sky with towering clouds a Dutch ship sails. More Dutch vessels can be made out in the middle zone and further in the distance.
  
  A Swedish three-master under full sail approaches from the right middle ground. Between the two coastlines a stiff breeze makes the waves go up. The torn flags tell us the ships have survived even heavier weather. The long shadows on the choppy water add another dramatic note.
  
  The scene takes place off the Swedish coast on the Sound, a narrow strait between present day Denmark and Sweden where Dutch mercantile ships sailing to the Baltic had to pass through. The Dutch called their trade with countries bordering on the East Sea their “moedernegotie” (mother-trade). As the backbone of their economy this trade was of fundamental importance to the Dutch Republic.

  Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten (bautizado el 1 de marzo de 1622 en Amsterdam - ¿enterrado en julio de 1666 en Amsterdam?) Fue un pintor holandés de arte y paisajes marinos, en particular de los acontecimientos de la Primera Guerra Anglo-Holandesa y la Guerra Holandesa-Sueca. Existe cierta confusión sobre la identidad de cuatro paisajistas llamados Beerstraaten; Johannes, este Jan Abrahamsz, Abraham y Anthonie. Jan Abrahamsz, pintor, se casó en Amsterdam el 30 de agosto de 1642. De este matrimonio nacieron once hijos, y cuando se casó por segunda vez en 1665, nació una hija. Actualmente, The RKD registra a Johannes como la misma persona, y se considera que Abraham Beerstraaten es su hijo mayor. Anthonie Beerstraaten estaba relacionada con este pintor. El RKD ha registrado dos pinturas firmadas por Anthonie van Beerstraten: una es una vista de un puerto marítimo del sur de 1664 (actualmente ubicación Enkhuizen) y la otra es una vista de una iglesia en Aarlanderveen en el antiguo ayuntamiento de Alphen aan den Rijn. Sobre la base de estas dos pinturas, C. Hofstede de Groot, uno de los primeros historiadores del arte holandés, clasificó las pinturas firmadas por A. Beerstraaten como de Anthonie si tenían una calificación inferior a las ya atribuidas a Abraham.
